Abmeldung: How To Deregister Your Address When Leaving Germany

Aktualisiert: Apr 18

Anyone who is leaving Germany and moving to another country is legally required to deregister.

The so-called Abmeldung (German term for deregistration) should be done before your departure but you can also do it after you have left.

Do I need to deregister?

Everyone leaving Germany and moving to another country must deregister their residence. (Germans call it Wohnsitz abmelden)

This applies to both foreigners and Germans.

In case you have not actually registered in Germany you will not need to deregister.

You also need to deregister if...

  • you are leaving one of several apartments in Germany, for which you are registered and the Berlin apartment persists

  • you give up one of several Berlin apartments, for which you are registered

  • you give up a main or secondary residence, without moving in to another apartment in

Why do I need a deregistration confirmation (Abmeldebestätigung)?

To obtain this official document is very important when leaving Berlin. Otherwise you might still have to pay taxes here. Legally all registered people living in Germany also have to pay tax here.

Also you will need the deregistration confirmation to cancel any contracts and mostly allows you to cancel contracts before they would actually end. Therefore it is highly recommendable to deregister before you leave Germany.

What documents do I need to deregister?

To complete you deregistration you will need the following documents:

a copy of your passport (it is sufficient to have it in black/white)

Deregistration Form

Your filled out deregistration form (Abmeldeformular)

Note: Since 2016 you will not need a landlord confirmation to deregister anymore

How can I deregister in Berlin?

The process for deregistration is short and simple

  • Download your deregistration form here

  • Fill in your deregistration form

  • Print the form

  • Send the form to a local registration office, the Bürgeramt (you can also take it there in person - find your nearest Bürgeramt in the list below)

When do I need to deregister in Berlin?

Ideally you should deregister before you leave. Send off your deregistration form 3 weeks before your departure. Once you have deregistered, you will receive a document confirming your deregistration called Abmeldebestätigung/Abmeldebescheinigung.

I already left Berlin and have not deregistered - what shall I do now?

It is not a problem to deregister after you have left Germany. You will need to send your deregistration form to the registration office within 14 days of your departure. If you pass the 14 days, you can still send it, usually this is accepted.

Just fill out the deregistration for online and send it to the registration office (Bürgeramt) by mail. To confirm your deregistration, call the registration office you sent the form to.

How to receive your deregistration confirmation from abroad

The registration office does not send you the deregistration confirmation by default and they normally neither send it to international addresses. Therefore to obtain an deregistration confirmation (Abmeldebestätigung) on paper you can ask a former friend in Berlin if the registration office can send it to their address. In this way your friend can sent it you via e-mail or mail.

Note: Add the following to your deregistration form - Bitte senden Sie die Abmeldebescheinigung an die nachstehende deutsche Adresse: (add in German address)

(English: Please send the deregistration confirmation to the following German address: (address))

Do I have to deregister if I move to another address within Berlin (Ummeldung)?

When moving within Berlin or Germany, you will not have to deregister your address.

However you have to register the new address. Germans call this Ummeldung (re-registration).

It is important you are registered at the address where you are living.

When filling out the new registration form, note down your old address on the form. The registration office will automatically deregister your old address and replace it by the new one. You can also keep two residences but make sure to indicate this on the form.

Can somebody take over the process for me?

Yes, indeed.
